Alexander Stephen fonds. 1928-1940.

The fonds consists of records pertaining to Stephen's literary work and his social concerns, including the Canadian depression of the 1930s and the world rise of fascism. The fonds also includes two scrapbooks containing letters, clippings, photographs (including Norman Bethune) and related materials. Another scrapbook (1928-1963) was completed by Stephen's wife after his death.

A.M. Stephen was born near Hanover, Ontario and he obtained part of his education at Walkerton Collegiate Institute. He travelled west and pursued occupations such as cattle ranching and logging before he went to Europe to serve in World War I. After the war, he moved to Vancouver where he taught and took an active part in the literary, social and political life in Vancouver.
